Shred at its best! Joe’s most recent album is the 2004 Speed Metal Messiah, where we can hear expert and precise virtuoso instrumentalism, superb production quality, and an awesome sound.
In addition, the album shows a maturation of Joe’s compositional style, with more restraint and thoughtfulness in many songs than in previous albums. He has also recently produced an instructional DVD called Neo Classical Guitar 2. Joe has kindly given us signed copies of these works for you to win in our competition below!
Equipment
Joe predominantly uses 2 ESP Joe Stump Custom S guitars with alder bodies, 21 scalloped jumbo 6000 frets, and DiMarzio HS3 (bridge) and YJM (neck) pickups. The middle pickup is a stock ESP single coil. He is also an exponent of the graphite nut which, along with the locking tremolo, helps him stay in tune despite his heavy use of the whammy bar. He uses Marshall, ENGL and Rhino amplification.
You can also get his limited edition DVD Neo-Classical Guitar 2 from http://www.shredacademy.com/artists/j_stump3.htm; however, beware - limited edition is what it says it is – once they’re gone, they’re gone!
Joe’s influences include Blackmore, Malmsteen, Uli Jon Roth, Gary Moore, Hendrix and Michael Schenker, and according to www.live4metal.com, his 5 fave records are: Deep Purple – Made in Japan, Rainbow – Rising or Rainbow Live in Germany 1976,Yngwie Malmsteen – Rising Force, Gary Moore – We Want Moore, Jimi Hendrix – Band of Gypsys.
These influences can be heard in his song structures, his neo-classical scaling and phrasing, and also in his technique itself. See below for a video clip of him demonstrating the double-picking technique to improve speed and accuracy; GTV thanks Berklee College of Music and Joe Stump for permission to use the clip!
